In the past, if you needed to redesign your website, it had to be completely rebuilt from the ground up because the visual design template was built right into each page.  Some legacy companies out there are still designing this way and costing their clients money.  I design in standards compliant XHTML and CSS, and believe in the principal of separating presentation from content. This keeps visual presentation code out of the way of search engine spiders, making cleaner content for a better search ranking. It also allows easier re-styling of a web site without ever touching live content pages.  Furthering this concept, Drupal is built to produce compliant code and supports fully custom themes built purely in CSS.  This means if you ever need to re-style your dynamic web site, its as simple as creating a new theme.  All of your content, products and users stay in tact, just switch it on in the admin section and your done!  The future of your website is secure with proper forethought and quality "guts". 

Usability is key to results

No matter how attractive your site is, if your visitors can't find what they're looking for, they WILL find the "back" button.  Every web site has a goal or desired action for the user to take, and site usability is all about making that happen as smoothly as possible. 

Navigation menus help this by being easy to read, understand, and use.  The user should be able to choose the appropriate menu item without wondering which information is hidden on which page.  If dropdown menus are used, the hierarchy should be clear and not overwhelming.

Your content (text) is also key to your site's usability.  The words you use can drastically affect a visitor's actions and emotions while they are on your web site.  If your goal is simply delivering information, then you must deliver it the most understandable way possible.  If the goal is a sale or a sales contact, you have to be more persuasive and show your reader that you really are their best choice.  Some general questions to ask yourself before writing your web site content would be:

• What is the purpose of the website?
• What action would you like visitors to take?
• Is there a specific service or product you would like to promote?
• What image do you want your website to reflect?
• What emotion do you want your visitors to feel when they read your content?

If you want visitors to follow through with your desired action, you have to get them there with your navigation, but also convince them its the right thing to do with your compelling content.
